Railroads in Peru: How important were they?

Analyzing the evolution and main features of Peru’s railway system

Mark Henley/Panos Pictures

The document analyzes the evolution and main features of Peru’s railway system. This being said, the author claims that since the mid-19th century, railroads were considered a promise for achieving progress, providing a faster transport service at lower passenger fares and freight rates. Thereby, the document suggests that railroads can help in the economic and social development of both Peru and other countries in the region, thus offering a cheaper and more efficient means of transportation than other traditional modes.

The structure of the paper is as follows. After a brief introduction, section one discusses the construction and nature of railroads in Peru, whereas section two describes the optimism of politicians and businessmen about the impact of railroads. Meanwhile, chapter three evaluates the time savings due to the construction of railroads, whilst section four analyzes the differences in passenger fares and freight rates between railroads and other transportation modes. Finally, section five compares the freight rates in Peru and other countries, whereas chapter six provides some concluding arguments on the subject.
