Managing resource-dependence amidst opportunities and challenges: Defining a new sustainability narrative for Caribbean coastal economies

Can converting to a green economy assist poverty reduction and sustainable growth?

GDNet

Frequent disasters and crises such as hurricanes, tsunamis and earthquakes now shape growth in the Caribbean. This remains a significant challenge to sustained growth and development in the Caribbean as it offsets years of progress and investment. Some analysts estimate that Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) spend as much as 20% of their GDP on coping with climate change. This Policy Brief defines a new approach that works more naturally to maximize resources and share benefits more equally across society, while also ensuring sustained development in the long-term. The authors also identify a number of ways to address the legacy of fragile and volatile structural features of resource dependent growth in the region.

Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE) will cover lodging for all presenters and will offer a limited number of full grants to cover travel expenses. Those interested in a full grant are requested to send a current CV as well. A subset of those presenting a paper will be invited to submit their work for publication in a special issue of the Latin American Economic Review (formerly Economía Mexicana).
