Trade and economic relations between the republic of Tajikistan and the Islamic republic of Afghanistan

How can improving transport infrastructure develop trade relations between the two countries?

International Affairs

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Afghanistan has gradually become one of Tajikistan’s most important trade and economic partners. This was largely facilitated by their common challenges of being landlocked and isolated. This paper analyzes the main aspects of trade and economic relations between Tajikistan and Afghanistan in the post-Soviet period. It focuses specifically on transport infrastructure between the two countries and its influence on trade and socio-economic cooperation; transit and re-export.

The data shows significant potential for the development of trade between the two countries. However, Tajikistan’s is not fully utilizing its resources and capacities in trade with Afghanistan, which is mainly due to the lack of established industrial cooperation.
