Women and ICTs in the economy and labor

Exploring income opportunities and participation of women in ICT

Sven Torfinn/Panos Pictures

The paper aims to shed light on the participation and contribution of women in the field of information technology and communication in the region. This being said, the authors analyze digital inclusion policies in Latin America in order to understand income opportunities and participation of women in ICT. Moreover, the article explores the position of Latin America and the Caribbean in the use and development of ICT.

The document is organized as follows. After the introductory chapter, the second section provides an overview of employment opportunities and of ICTs for women, thus shedding light on gender inclusion policies and equal opportunities in the field of ICT. Meanwhile, the third section discusses several case studies in the region among them Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic and Uruguay. Finally, chapter four offers some conclusions and recommendations on the subject.

The authors conclude that the region is advancing rapidly in the development of ICT, but still needs to prioritize social inclusion to ensure participation of women in this sector. The paper also suggests that policymakers should increase the reach of broadband technology throughout the region in order to achieve universal access to ICTs.
